 Richard defeated the Belgian qualifier Germain Gigounon 6-3 6-4 6-0 and will play Carlos Berlocq next.
Richard was able to impose himself in the first set after trading breaks and despite a rather high error count on his side. After this tense start, the second set was better quality-wise, but still close because Gigounon played well. Qualifiers in the first round are often tougher than they look on paper. In the final set, Richard reached full control of the match for a 6-3 6-4 6-0 victory.
