 Richard's clay season has not been stunning. A defeat against Lucas Pouille in Monte Carlo, a withdrawal from Barcelona and two defeats against Kei Nishikori in Madrid and Rome. But all changed in Roland Garros where he defeated the Japanese 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2.
Richard started the first set like his recent matches against Nishkori: relying on defense. This did not work out, Though he was a break up, Nishikori came back right away and broke Richard for a 4-2 lead. Then came the rain.
After the interruption, Richard was a different player. He went for his shots and displayed great variety to force errors. Richard won four games in a row and took the frist set.
The second set was a clay masterclass: 6-2 with 13 winners and 3 unforced errors only.The third set was balanced, but good play from the Japanese allowed him to break at 5-4*.
Richard was not affected, he broke right of the start of the forth set and never looked back. His 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2 victory allowed him to reach his first quarter final in Roland Garros where he will play 2nd seed Andy Murray.
