 Gasquet, Ancic Enter Second Round

Press (English)

France's Richard Gasquet, the 15 th seed, has gotten off to a good start at the Rogers Cup, a Masters Series event being held on the courts of Montreal's Jarry Park.

Gasquet, a 19-year-old right-hander who was the youngest player in ATP history to qualify for a Masters Series event in Monte Carlo at 15 years and 10 months old, eliminated Russian Mikhail Youzhny, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

“I played a great match,” recognized Gasquet, who posted a win over Roger Federer earlier this year. “The courts are fast, but I don't see why I can't do well here. I'm happy that I won in straight sets and that I played an excellent tiebreak to finish it off. I've got good results on clay and grass – I should be able to do well on hard courts.”

Completely recovered from his wrist injury, Gasquet says that he rested well after the last Davis Cup tie. “I feel really good. I was exhausted, but everything is better now,” explained the Frenchman.

“I've got a tough draw, but those things happen. Since I cracked the top-20, I have to wait a bit longer, but that's normal,” he said, referring to a potential third-round match-up with Rafael Nadal.

In another opener, Brazilian Ricardo Mello stopped 16-year-old Phillip Bester of Vancouver, 6-4, 6-2.

“I was so nervous, my heart rate must have been 220 beats per minute,” said Bester. “I had a match plan in which I would go to the net – I was able to implement it, but my nerves caused me to make a lot of errors. Still, I'm happy with the experience,” said Bester, who earned his first ATP points just two weeks ago.

In other action, Romania's Andrei Pavel beat Christophe Rochus of Belgium, 6-1; 7-5, while the other Rochus, Olivier eliminated Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, 6-3 6-4. Other winners include Spain's Tommy Robredo, who stopped American Kevin Kim, and Slovak Karol Beck who ousted Noam Okun of Israel.
