Richard is through to the third round of the US Open after Giorgio Galimberti retired in the fourth set. The final result was 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 3-2 ret.
Richard got off to a flying start sailing into a 5-0 lead. Sublime play saw him break the Italian twice with some scintillating groundstrokes, including some breathtaking backhands. Richard took the set 6-1, delighting the Grandstand crowd with his shotmaking ability and dominating
aggressive play.
Richard struggled in the second set as the Italian's form improved. At the end of the set Richard received treatment on his arm. Going down early a break in the third set, Richard quickly regained the upper hand, breaking back and then taking a further break to give himself a two sets to love lead.
After only 17 minutes of the fourth set, the intruiging match came to an end with Galimberti retiring.
