After a first round bye, Richard defeated Fabio Fognini 6-2 6-1 in the second round of Sydney.

One reason for the decisive win in less than an hour was the fact, that Richard mastered the strong wind much better than his Italian opponent.

Richard had deuce or breakpoints in almost each of Fognini's service games, while he himself had to fend off breakpoints only once, in the fourth gam of the match. His next opponent is Denis Istomin.
