Richard had to go to five sets to defeat the Australian James Duckworth in the first round in Wimbledon: 6-7 6-3 3-6 6-0 6-1. His next opponent ist Nick Kyrgios, another Australian.

Richard was to arrive late for his match and did not look too comfortable at the start of the match. When the trainer was called, there was fear of a problem for him. But it was the Australian's shoulder which got treatment which did not hamper him firing serves, though. The set went to a breaker and two loose erros cost Richard the set.

In the second set, Richard had a better start, broke early and kept his advantage for a 6-3 win. It looked as if Richard got a hold of the match in the third set, but he did not use his breakpoint chances, played one poor service game and the set was over.

Strangely enough, Duckworth could not take his momentum into the fourt set, his service declined just a little bit and Richard did not pardon that. Better on returns, more aggresive and precise, he hardly hit an error and took the set 6-0 in less than 20 minutes. The final set was a copy of the fourth. Richard in command and control, never in doubt for a 6-7 6-3 3-6 6-0 6-1 victory.
