France won the Davis Cup final beating Belgium 3-2. Richard was selected to play the doubles with Pierre Hugues Herbert and they defeated the Belgian pair 6-1 3-6 7-6 6-4.
Richard showed increasing form in the last tournaments of the year, such as beating world number 5 Dominic Thiem in Vienna. But France has many players and it was not a guarantee that he would be chosen to play an active part in the Davis Cup final. Yannick Noah, the French captain surprised everyone, though by selecting Richard and Pierre Hugues Herbert who had never played together before. But they delivered and scored the important doubles point for France.
