Roger Federer edged a high quality and highly exciting encounter with Richard Gasquet as he won the Rogers Cup title 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Richard claimed before the match that there were no expectations surrounding him going into the final and he certainly came out hitting without inhibitions. Richard played breathtaking tennis at times as he broke the world number one twice on his way to the 6-2 set.

The match nearly took a very dramatic turn in Richard's favour as he found himself at 0-40 on Federer's serve in the opening game of the second set. However, the Swiss was able to hold on and then immediately broke Richard's serve to swing the match momentum in his favour.

From then on Richard struggled to find a way back into the match. He was still showcasing some excellent shots, and put on a terrific display of quality in his bid to topple the world number one. But Federer was able to play the big points slightly better and he went on to win sets two and three to claim the Rogers Cup title.

It was a superb effort by Richard and he showed the world exactly the type of talent he possesses. The Toronto crowd were simply stunned at times with some of Richard's backhands. He'll take a lot of confidence from this week as he heads in to Cincy which begins tomorrow.

Well done Richard!!
