Gasquet seals French victory

Richard Gasquet defeated Andrei Pavel 63 62 75 to give France an unassailable 3-1 victory in their BNP Paribas World Group First Round tie with Romania. The 20-year-old produced another high-class performance as he completed a perfect weekend for himself in the team competition, having won both of his singles rubbers in straight sets.

“I was very pleased with my game,” said Gasquet. “I was a little bit tense before the match. I wanted to make no mistakes this week and win both matches. It was very important to win that point. It’s never happened before, that I win two points, and it’s very nice.”

Gasquet strong from the start

It’s not often one sees a men’s match with both players displaying such flashy single-handed backhands and their ability to take the ball early on that side was responsible for a number of enthralling rallies.

Gasquet’s greater consistency meant that he won most of them and it was a single break that won him the opening set, Pavel double-faulting in the eighth game then the youngster holding to love.

The Frenchman won another captivating exchange of backhands in the fifth game of the second set that helped him to break and put his country on the threshold of victory. In response, Pavel expressed his frustration by slamming his racket into the court, for which he received a code violation.

Romanian Tennis Federation President Ilie Nastase looked on from courtside but could do nothing as the world No.16 added another break that extended his lead to two sets.
