On a hot afternoon in New York, Richard put in a solid performance to defeat Sergio Roitman 7-5, 6-1, 6-2.

In the second round, Richard will face Donald Young.

Richie sported a new red shirt for the start of his US Open campaign. After a tight first set against Roitman, which saw Richie come back from a break down, Richie then firmly took control in the second and final sets.

Controlling play, Richie set up his usual backhand dazzlers, but also mixed up his game often coming to the net.

Lots of fans turned out to watch Richie's first round win and he proved a popular winner in New York!
